Favourite Poses To Make Couples Feel More Comfortable In Front Of The Camera
How do you relax in front of a camera?
So how do you pose in front of the camera without feeling awkward? It’s a question I get asked at nearly every single wedding, so if you are feeling a bit anxious about your couples portraits, know that you are certainly not alone and I am here to help! There are some super simple tricks I use that guarantee to help you relax in front of the camera but there are also some other things to consider as well such as:
Getting to know your photographer before hand so they don’t feel like a stranger on the day (an engagement shoot can be perfect for this!)
Know that you do not need to be a ‘model’ for this, you will look amazing!
Go into the shoot with a positive mindset and remember we are just having fun!
We can even play some of your favourite music if you like!
So without further ado, here are my 8 best poses for couples pictures at your wedding!
The Walking Shot
The easiest way to help couples relax is to introduce movement into the photos. It’s extremely difficult to be stiff when you’re walking, so getting my couples to simply walk towards me hand in hand is always my first shot. This helps them relax naturally and allows them to spend some time together without a camera directly in their face.
Add More Movement
I can then add even more movement into the shots by getting my couple to bump hips as they walk (this always leads to a good giggle!) or getting them to dance or twirl each other round. I often tell my couples to practice their first dance if they aren’t sure what to do!
Looking At Each Other
Once they’re finished dancing, I let them relax for a minute and do a nice simple shot of the couple just looking at each other. This can be hand in hand, or hands wherever feels natural!
Leading Each Other
It’s important to not linger on one pose too long and keep things moving, so I like to reintroduce movement in-between shots. Another great way of doing this is getting my couple to lead each other across the frame and look back at each other.
A Simple Kiss
At the end of each pose I always ask my couple to kiss of course, it’s their wedding day after all!
Kiss With Your Teeth
This is a hilarious prompt. Every time I say it the couple are like '“err what?” and it always leads to laughter. You can get some incredible shots using this prompt though, but if it doesn’t work, it always leads to laughter which makes great photos anyway!
Whisper Into Their Ear
Another great one to get my couple’s laughing. I get the couple to stand ‘prom style’ with one standing behind the other and get one to whisper into the other’s ear. My favourite prompt is to get them to say what they first thought when they saw their partner walk down the aisle. This creates either a very emotional response or a naughty and funny one (which is my favourite of course!)
Get Some Wide Angle Shots
Not every couple is a fan of close-up shots, so it’s important to get some wider ones too. I love to get some wide angle shots by incorporating my couple into the background of the venue!
